Many people dismiss the idea of seasonal affective disorder and chalk it up to weather, or the fact that people can't see their friends as much when the roads are bad. However, that is exactly what the disorder is. The SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) explains that SAD is "triggered by changes in seasons. This form of depression usually occurs during the fall and winter months when there is less sunlight, and the days get shorter. SAD usually lifts during the spring and summer months." They explain that it is just the reduction of sunlight exposure and natural movement that causes this depression.
I understand that this is a professional definition of a very real phenomenon, but I disagree with how it is seen in society. SAMHSA suggests treatment for SAD through antidepressants or talk therapy. I think that the prescription for antidepressants is incredibly surprising. The phenomenon of seasonal changes having an impact on human behavior is natural. All other plants and animals have annual cycles that flow with the seasons. In areas without 4 seasons, they at least adapt to a wet and dry season. I don't see why this doesn't apply to humans in society.
The idea that humans need to be working at a constant rate of productivity is destructive and an effect of years of propaganda for capitalist America. Hibernation, or at least taking a break during the winter months, is natural. The only reason it is seen as a disorder is to ensure that we are working hard all year round for maximum productivity.
I would rather be a human being than a human doing, and I
see the attitude for nature's natural cycles as maladaptive for our development
and fruition.
