X's Unique Social Media Medium

I post on social media to update those around me on what I've been doing. More so to brag about what a fun life I live or how many friends I have. I post once a month on Instagram, which also posts to Facebook. For short-term events, I post on my Snapchat story or occasionally my Instagram story. All of which have a short phrase that I used that month, or to reference what's going on. But that caption is just a modifier to the images I post.

I was never big on Twitter, and I never use X or Threads, let alone Truth Social. But in the time that I did have Twitter, I thought it was a very different form of social media. X rarely uses photos. You have the option to, but it is much more common to just post a big paragraph or an idea for others to read. X is closer to Reddit and Tumblr than something used for connecting with friends. You wouldn't follow your friends on Reddit, but you follow your friends on X. This platform is a strange connector between the community of Meta's social media and the word-intensive media of Tumblr.

X is also well-known as one of the most political apps on the market, with even its ownership being a political act, after Elon Musk used it to allow Donald Trump to voice his opinions after Twitter struggled to maintain a platform without misinformation, but still providing free speech. This is why I tend to stray away from the platform, as I try to get my news from unbiased sources.

While it is a different platform strategy, I can't say it is ineffective. Meta is copying the dynamic of the app with their new app, Threads. Even Donald Trump hopped on the train and created Truth Social, a platform that prioritizes "free speech," allowing Donald Trump to voice his opinions after being banned from other mainstream sites. This further solidifies the idea that X and similar apps are used for political conversation and political propaganda, which tiptoes the line of just being a tool for politicians to communicate with the masses.
